Uniting the Sun’s Hale magnetic cycle and “extended solar cycle” paradigms

Through meticulous daily observation of the Sun’s large-scale magnetic field Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO) has catalogued two (Hale) cycles solar activity. Those (∼22-year long) Hale have yielded four (∼11-year sunspot (numbers 21 through 24). Recent research highlighted persistence “Extended Cycle” (ESC) and its connection to fundamental Cycle–albeit a host proxies resulting from image analysis photosphere, chromosphere corona. This short manuscript presents correspondence ESC, surface toroidal evolution, evolution Cycle. As Sunspot Cycle 25 begins, interest in observationally mapping Extended could not be higher given potential predictive capability that synoptic scale observations can provide.
